Confessions of a tired travel creator
The warm fuzzies are REAL: an insane number of people have reached out me to telling me about the creative drone contests happening NOW…
I want to enter, but I can’t make time for this amongst the 💯 other things I have going on.
Instead: I’m telling you 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗗 into the DJI context
Contest guidelines: “submit a video that’s a few minutes long, has at least a little bit of drone footage that is travel, sports, blah blah related”
A note: I own my sexy. But no one will ever know it, why? B/c I don’t need you to know I pole danced for 5 years and only my dance instructor has ever seen it.
Drone contest entry
Opening scene is a dark room. You see short flashes of bright light. Camera angle: floor. Looking up as 6” sequined heels are slowly .. walking toward the lens. Then the camera seemingly spinning and you realize with a whip of hair YOU are spinning. Around a pole. A high drone shot corner of the room, slow panning as a spotlight shines a light on a girl climbing and flipping upside down. It’s art. It’s grace. It’s strength.
From 15’ she drops down the pole and into the splits, rolls over her should and confidently starts walking … then RUNNING to the door. You’re right behind her shoulder (a drone), her insanely long hair is a blur… and the door flings OPEN. To pure bright sunlight. And you fly over her shoulder, realizing she’s the one controlling the drone and fly ahead to a reveal of the beach.
Then you’re right on her heels as the camera runs with her a few inches off the sand. She throws off her shoes and with the camera in her hands now, you run into the waves and dive into the w
And the camera reveals an underwater scene: 120 manta rays (Maldives, Nov 2021)…
As you dive up, the drone pulls up out of the water, revealing her swimming hard (a triathlete for years competing in San Diego) and in the background, a volcano (Oahu, March 2021)
The drone flies HIGH, then FAST spiraling down toward the water (FPV drone) a quick switch to @gopro as you see a new underwater scene. The water is a deep green. Bull sharks, everywhere (Playa del Carmen, Dec 2020)
You see her eyes wide, a mix of fear and awe. She dives down amongst them anyway. And as you come up ..the drone pulls out of the water. The tide is out. Far. You see sand forever … and ever (Zanzibar, Jan 2021) and as the drone flies through a boat, up the mast, it then dives back down into the water…
And this repeats. With every place I traveled in the last couple years… the list is long.
The last scene is a dive … getting deeper and darker… into a 100’ cenote (El Pit, Tulum, Dec 2020)… and as it fades to black, the camera pulls away from a transition showing a passport. As she laughs and throws it into her drone bag, takes out her drone… and as a top down shot… the drone flies up and away as she walks away with her roll along luggag
