Are you planning a visit to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic? Many people wonder what there is to do at Puerto Plata and if it’s a good place to visit.
Whether you’re at port stopping by on a cruise or spending some time exploring the area, there’s a decent number of options for things to do as well as some helpful tips to know before you travel here.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make the most of your time at the Puerto Plata!
Where is Puerto Plata?
Puerto Plata is situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, overlooking the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo, making it easily accessible for travelers arriving by air or land.
The region is known for its stunning beaches, lush tropical landscapes, and vibrant culture, attracting visitors from around the world.
Additionally, Puerto Plata is conveniently located near other popular tourist destinations, such as the resort town of Punta Cana to the southeast and the historic city of Santiago de los Caballeros to the southwest.
Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural exploration, Puerto Plata serves as an excellent base for exploring all that the Dominican Republic has to offer.
Exploring the Damajagua Waterfalls
One of the must-do excursions in Puerto Plata is visiting the Damajagua Waterfalls. There are 27 cascading waterfalls (of various size) surrounded by lush jungle.
This adventure is for well, exactly that: adventurous travelers.
If the idea of sliding down a rock surface into a relatively narrow space gives you pause, then you will likely be one of the 10% of people who either don’t jump or back out of doing this excursion (I’m being honest)!
Visiting the Damajagua Waterfalls is a very unique experience to Puerto Plata and there aren’t many places like it in the world.
First and foremost, come prepared for a day of physical activity. Bring as little as possible (water if you must, a waterproof camera and that’s it). I watched person after person jump into the water and lose their phone.
While the hike to the waterfalls is relatively short, many felt it was strenuous, especially in the tropical heat (or post cruise-buffet, I’m not sure which).
For this part it’s important to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for hiking, but it’s really important to wear shoes that can also double as water shoes with good grip for when you get to the waterfalls.
Once you arrive at the waterfalls, be prepared to get wet! Whether you’re jumping off the falls or sliding down them, you’re sure to get soaked in the process. I wore a bathing suit and dry fit shorts and was glad I did.
Safety is paramount when exploring the waterfalls, so be sure to follow the guidance of your tour guides at all times. They will provide instructions on the best techniques for jumping and sliding and will ensure that everyone in your group stays safe throughout the excursion.
The Damajagua Waterfalls offer a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic up close, and you won’t want to miss a single moment of the excitement.

Buggy Ride Through Town and Jungle
Another exciting activity available at Puerto Plata is a buggy ride through the town and jungle. Hop on a Polaris buggy and explore the local area, passing by homes, encountering wildlife, and even stopping in town to sample some local snacks or purchase crafts.
The buggy ride is bumpy and adventurous, perfect for those who enjoy a bit of excitement. You’ll navigate through mud and rivers, making for a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for the rough terrain and hold on tight as you zoom through the jungle.
On our tour, we stopped in town where you could get out, buy local goods or try some local food.
Other Activities in Puerto Plata
The waterfalls and buggy ride tour was a half day tour and cost $180 per person (booked through the cruise I was on, Virgin Voyages).
Heres’ the description of the tour I was on (called “Waterfalls of Damajagua and Off-Road Adventure):
There are LOTS of other options of things you can do.
Cultural tours offer insight into the local way of life, with options like rum tasting, cigar rolling, and cooking experiences available.
For those who want to adventure, there are also options for ziplining. If you want the height, but just the view, consider the gondola ride that’s right in town.
And if relaxation is more your style, a trip to Sosua Beach offers opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging on the sand.

Exploring the Port
Back at Taino Bay is the cruise port, where there’s plenty to see and do without even leaving the area. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, taking in views of the ocean and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.
Many visitors opt to spend time at the pool (there is both a large pool for a pool party or a floating river pool) or relax in a beach club, sipping cocktails and enjoying the sunshine.
For those who love to shop, the port offers a variety of shops selling everything from souvenirs to local crafts.
Take some time to browse and pick up a unique memento to remember your trip by.
Weather in Puerto Plata
Puerto Plata has a tropical climate with consistent warmth year-round. Situated on the northern coast, it enjoys abundant sunshine and temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-30 degrees Celsius).
The wet season, from May to November, brings brief afternoon showers, while the dry season, December to April, offers clear skies and lower humidity levels.
This delightful climate makes Puerto Plata a favorite destination for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
