If you’re planning a cruise on Virgin Voyages, did you know there is a way that you can get to know your “cruise directors” (The Happenings Cast), get the insider helpful tips from them on your voyage, meet OTHER sailors on your vacation AND become familiar with the layout of the ship AND drink on a fun bar crawl all at the same time.
THIS is Grog Walk. And there are a lot of advantages in doing this on the FIRST night of your sailing (spoiler: because your first night party will be the least… exciting… one).
But what exactly is it, how much does it cost, and is it worth your time? As someone who’s experienced it firsthand, here’s everything you need to know to decide if this bar crawl is your vibe.
What Is the Grog Walk?
Virgin Voyages Grog Walk is a bar crawl across four bars on a Virgin Voyages ship. Sometimes it’s five, I’ve seen variations of it.
The term “Grog” refers to alcoholic beverages, and this experience is hosted by the Happenings Cast—Virgin Voyages’ version of cruise directors and entertainment staff.
It’s more than just hopping between bars; the Grog Walk includes:
- Specialty Cocktails: Each bar crafts a unique drink, introduced by the bartender.
- Light Snacks: To keep you fueled during the crawl.
- Interactive Missions: Fun tasks that encourage you to mingle with your group.
And no, you don’t have to drink! Non-drinkers can still participate and enjoy the vibe, but don’t forget, you still have to pay to get in! (No one is going to force you to drink alcohol is what I’m saying here).
Don’t forget there is a VIDEO version of this blog post!
How Much Does It Cost?
The Grog Walk costs $50 per person, which includes the four specialty cocktails and snacks.
Considering the value of drinks on board, this price is a great deal for those who enjoy cocktails. Even if you’re not drinking, the experience itself makes it worth considering.

What Happens During the Grog Walk?
Here’s what to expect during the event:
- Meet Your Group: Everyone in the Grog Walk receives a fun mask to identify fellow participants.
- Bar Crawl Fun: The Happenings Cast leads the group to four different bars on the ship, ensuring no one gets left behind (yes, there’s a caboose to keep the group together!).
- Unique Drinks & Stories: Each bar features a signature cocktail with a short presentation by the bartender.
- Social Vibes: You’ll complete missions to get to know your group, making it a fantastic icebreaker.
The Grog Walk isn’t just about the drinks—it’s a unique way to explore the ship, meet new people, and learn from the Happenings Cast, who are your go-to crew for cruise tips.
Why Do It on the First Night?
I highly recommend doing Grog Walk on the first night of your sailing for two main reasons:
Turn Up the Energy: The first night is typically the mellowest on Virgin Voyages. Most people are tired from travel, and the onboard Pajama Party isn’t the most lively event.
Does that mean the Pajama Party is boring? No. It just means IN COMPARISON to the parties on the other nights, it’s relatively the most mellow one and Grog Walk injects some excitement into your night!
Meet New Friends: By connecting with people early, you’ll have potential new friends for the rest of your cruise. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, it’s a great way to build your social circle.
Don’t forget to pack THIS!
Virgin Voyages has reimagined sailing and what you need to pack on for this trip is DIFFERENT than a normal cruise line. There are many items I wish I knew to bring (that I didn’t have with me on my first sailing).

Bottom Line: Is the Grog Walk Worth It?
Absolutely! If you enjoy socializing, exploring the ship, or just want a fun activity to kick off your cruise, the Grog Walk is a must.
Even if you don’t drink, the interactive missions and camaraderie make it a worthwhile experience. Plus, it’s one of the best ways to familiarize yourself with the ship and meet fellow Sailors.
