Drink Carefully Crafted Cocktails at La Cave in Le Chateau
Nestled in the heart of La Crosse, in a stunning historical building dating back to 1854, is Le Chateau. Here, beneath the sophisticated ambience of the upstairs restaurant, you’ll discover the delightful gem of La Cave. What makes La Cave truly stand out is its dedication to the art of craft cocktails.
It’s not hard to find a dive bar in downtown La Crosse, but locating a spot like La Cave, where each cocktail is thoughtfully concocted, is a bit more challenging. So when you step into this beautifully designed space, you can expect a treat for both your eyes and your palate.
Indulge in a glass of their perfectly mixed cocktails while nibbling on a cheese and charcuterie board. Apart from the craft cocktails, La Cave also boasts a noteworthy wine list, adding another layer of sophistication to your visit.

Gluten-Free Eating
If you have some dietary restrictions and are looking for gluten free options, you’re in luck. I had the opportunity to travel with some GF friends From Tent to Takeoff! Here’s what they have to say…
Are you or your travel partner Gluten-free? Then don’t worry, La Crosse has you covered. As a GF family, we always struggle to find wholesome options for everyone. That was not the case in La Crosse.
While almost every restaurant we stopped at had at least a couple of options, the three below really stood out in the variety of options and support for our community:
1. Buzzard Billy’s – They have an entire GF menu, cajun fare, and a super cool atmosphere. What’s not to like?
2. The Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern – Fine dining with gluten-free rolls cooked to order. If you are looking for a special evening, this is it.
3. Big Al’s Pizza – Cool old-school atmosphere with gluten-free pizza on a cauliflower crust. Sometimes Pizza just hits the spot!

Don’t Miss Spectacular Views at These Overlooks
Hiking (or even walking) is optional, don’t miss out on these beautiful view points with no effort required!
La Crosse offers several viewpoints, but a few you CANNOT miss.
Sunny the Sunfish and Lake Onalaska
The first scenic spot I’d recommend is the overlook onto Lake Onalaska, where the Black and Mississippi Rivers meet and where you’ll have a chance to meet Sunny the Sunfish (google map here).
This vantage point offers panoramic views of the lake and the picturesque bluffs of Minnesota. It’s easily accessible with parking nearby, making it an excellent location for impromptu photo shoots or peaceful moments of contemplation.
Great River Landing
Another impressive viewpoint is found at the Great River Landing. This overlook offers an alternative perspective of the river and stands as the trailhead of the Great River State trail (google map here).
This trail, a 24-mile long, flat, well-kept path, is a cyclist’s dream. It connects to several other trails, enabling a comprehensive exploration of the surrounding landscapes. You can acquire a day pass for just five dollars or opt for a seasonal pass for prolonged access. Kayak and canoe rentals are also available if you prefer a water-based adventure.
Grandad Bluff
Next up is the view from Grandad Bluff! Standing majestically at 600 feet, Grandad Bluff offers a breathtaking panoramic view that covers three states – Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa (google map here).
This spectacular sight is a must-see when visiting La Crosse, delivering awe-inspiring vistas across the city and surrounding states. But there’s more to this location than just the view. Grandad Bluff is also a gateway to an array of trails for hiking and mountain biking, catering to outdoor enthusiasts of all levels.
Conveniently situated just a short 10-11 minute drive from downtown, with ample parking and an easy walk to the viewpoint, Grandad Bluff perfectly blends accessibility with the grandeur of nature. Whether you’re in search of an intense hike, a leisurely bike ride, or simply a tranquil spot to take in the scenery, Grandad Bluff should be on your La Crosse itinerary.
Apple Blossom Lookout
Following the beauty of Grandad Bluff, another enchanting viewpoint in the area is the Apple Blossom Lookout, located just across the big blue bridge on the Minnesota side. This destination allows for a complete, panoramic view of La Crosse from an entirely different vantage point (google map).
Apple Blossom Lookout is ideal for those who relish a short hike with a rewarding payoff. The trail leads you to an outstanding viewpoint that offers stunning views of the city, despite any potential haze. This lookout adds another dimension to your La Crosse adventure, providing a unique perspective of the city from across the state line.
A visit to Apple Blossom Lookout will enrich your appreciation for the picturesque landscape of this area. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast looking to capture breathtaking vistas or an explorer seeking out the best views in the region, a visit to Apple Blossom Lookout will surely be a memorable part of your La Crosse journey.
Kayak on the La Crosse River
Embarking on a kayaking adventure on the La Crosse River is a must when you visit La Crosse. The river’s unique spot, known as the Confluence, is where it merges with the Black River and the Mississippi River.
A popular rental spot is Island Outdoors, which attracts many outdoor enthusiasts with its broad range of water-based activities.
While kayaking is a primary draw, Island Outdoors also offers a variety of other watercrafts including water bikes or Hydro bikes, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal pontoons. This gives everyone a chance to find an activity that suits their taste.

Originating in La Crosse in 1965 and now boasting hundreds of locations, Kwik Trip is a unique part of the local culture that’s worth exploring.

This commitment extends even to their fruit selections, with a banana ripening room to make sure you get the perfect banana every day.
On a personal recommendation from Dave from the Kwik Trip team, make sure to try one of their dunker donuts. I decided to take one on my road trip to the airport, and it did not disappoint!

Top FAQs about La Crosse, Wisconsin
Below you’ll find some of the top questions people ask about La Crosse, Wisconsin!
What is the Weather Like in La Crosse, Wisconsin?
La Crosse, Wisconsin, experiences a humid continental climate, which is characterized by distinct seasonal variations in weather. This makes it a destination that offers different attractions depending on the time of year you plan to visit.
In the summer months, from June to August, La Crosse can be quite warm and humid, with high temperatures often reaching the mid-80s to low 90s degrees Fahrenheit (around 30 degrees Celsius).
This is a great time for outdoor activities such as hiking the bluffs, exploring Riverside Park, or enjoying a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi.
Conversely, winters in La Crosse, which typically run from December through February, are cold and snowy, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing. This makes it a good time for winter sports like snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.
In the transitional seasons, spring (March to May) and fall (September to November), you’ll find milder weather. Spring brings blossoming flowers and greener landscapes, perfect for enjoying the city’s parks. In fall, La Crosse becomes a fantastic spot for leaf-peeping as the city and surrounding countryside burst into spectacular displays of autumn colors. Remember, though, that weather can be changeable in these seasons, so it’s a good idea to pack layers.
Where Can I Find a Map of La Crosse, Wisconsin?
From my friends at Explore La Crosse, find a helpful map below! Otherwise, consider using google maps!
Is There an Airport in La Crosse, Wisconsin?
The La Crosse Regional Airport (LSE) services the city and surrounding areas. This airport provides commercial passenger flights, cargo services, and facilities for general aviation.
However, most people (including myself) flew via Madison Airport (about a 2 hour drive). Other common flight paths are via Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) or Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
These major hubs have numerous domestic and international flights, making them convenient starting points for many travelers.
Where Did the Name La Crosse Originate From?
La Crosse, Wisconsin was named by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike in 1805.
He was on an expedition up the Mississippi River when he saw Native Americans playing a game with sticks and a ball. This game reminded him of the French game “la crosse” because of the stick’s resemblance to a bishop’s crozier.
Pike named the area “Prairie La Crosse,” but eventually, “Prairie” was dropped, leaving just “La Crosse.” The game Pike saw is thought to be an early form of today’s sport, lacrosse.
Bottom Line
La Crosse, Wisconsin is a gem waiting to be explored with more things to do than I anticipated. Not only that, I didn’t expect to find thoughtfully crafted cocktails, a luxury boutique hotel, or spectacular views whether kayaking or at a lookout.
It’s a city where the charm of the Midwest perfectly blends with the vibrancy of outdoor activities, unique culinary experiences, and intriguing local customs.
