The 12 Hour Walk

DISCONNECTING with The 12 Hour Walk is RECONNECTING with oneself

I had the opportunity to connect with Blake Brinker, a friend of Colin O’Brady and one of the first to try The 12 Hour Walk.

In the interview below I’m (literally) looking for inspiration. It’s filmed 2 days before I went on my own 12 hour walk.

12 Things I learned from The 12 Hour Walk

On August 13th, 2022 while traveling in the Bahamas, I went on The 12 Hour Walk. Below are my learnings and reflections and I encourage YOU to try taking your own 12 Hour Walk.

1. Solo travel is a must for everybody

Traveling alone teaches you to enjoy your own company, to love spending time with yourself and being alone.

2. We always WANT to be prepared, but tbh, we’re often just… NOT. SO DIVE RIGHT IN.

I wanted to act like I was “race day ready”, but honestly, I had slightly overslept, was a bit hungover, was not yet packed up to go, but who cares. JUST DO IT ANYWAY. We will never be 100% ready in life for 100% of things life will serve up to us. So just dive in.

3. LIVE BOLDER. Bigger. And starting NOW.

And embrace your inner badass. I kept wanting to follow the rules verbatim, but you know what? It was a perfect day so I took my “walk” onto the water and paddled for nearly 10 miles.

4. Find moments to be regularly uncomfortable IN YOUR HEAD

Getting uncomfortable is key. It’s when we are too comfortable, at all times, that we are INCAPABLE of times of discomfort.

My years of century racing, hiking, triathlons and obstacle course racing didn’t train my body – it trained my mind.

5. Find moments to be regularly uncomfortable IN YOUR BODY

Sometimes we all just need to go camping to remember why we love our bed. Or we need to experience those 1s – like crawling to the top of Mt Whitney while hallucinating to realize that “I have a little blister on my foot from walking for an hour” isn’t that big of a deal.

6. Curiosity and wonder make life 10,000x more interesting

This made me walk incredibly easy. I just wanted to notice and look and explore… everything.

7. Sh** happens, but it’s about getting back up again

During my walk I took a break because I was dizzy from the heat. During this time I was approached by a man, that later, I ran away from while he followed me. I didn’t let this “end everything”. It completed my walk, but it did NOT complete my trip.

See the video version of this blog post!

8. Environment is everything

We all know that we are a product of who we spend our time with, but it’s also WHERE you spend your time. The beach, the ocean, it’s my happy place.

Want to see LITERALLY how beautiful it is in the Bahamas? This short drone video is the BEST of what I saw.

9. We MUST be our own cheerleaders and hype girls (or boys)

The voice in your head is the one you spend your ENTIRE DAY WITH. Go beyond just being kind to yourself.

10. Being overly connected can make you lose sight of who you should REALLY be connected with

In today’s age of social media, it’s too easy to be connected ALL the time and with EVERYONE. Make sure you have your priorities straight on who gets your time and who DOES NOT.

Speaking of social media… lol

11. Surround yourself with the right people and encouragement

There is a chance I would not have done this walk if it wasn’t for the other people at World Domination Summit doing it, too. This makes me realize the IMPORTANCE of having others around you supporting you and cheering you on (or doing the same) goal.

12. Most people won’t do The 12 Hour Walk

Everyone will see the value, everyone will be inspired by it, everyone will think “they should do that” or “I could do that” or “I want to do that”, but few will.

Want to take on the challenge? You can do the 12 Hour Walk AT ANY TIME.

So… how did the 12 Hour Walk go?

I tried doing The 12 Hour Walk while traveling in Nassau Bahamas. FAIL. I ended up breaking all the rules.
