It takes just one bad crash in the wrong situation with the wrong people around to make you lose your confidence flying drones.
She may have put her Mavic 1 Pro drone on the shelf for a few years, but later she came back to the joy of flying a drone with her Mavic Mini 3 Pro.
Meet Rebecca, a photographer and blogger capturing the great outdoors and her solo travel adventures. I had an opportunity to fly drones with her when she took my drone workshop at TravelCon in Memphis and we realized: there were some key safety tips and flying skills that gave her a TON of confidence to start flying drones again.
Key Learnings
- DO THE TWIRLIE – this is one of the key things I teach in my How to Fly a Drone Course. Once you’ve launched your drone, take it (directly) up (like an elevator) to what you think is the height of what you think is the “highest thing around you”. Keeping the gimbal at 0 degrees, do a twirlie (use the left stick to turn around in a circle) and LOOK to see if anything is higher than you. If no, then NOTE the height and remember, as long as you are flying at THIS HEIGHT, you won’t hit anything. This will give you the confidence to start flying away from you knowing you won’t hit something
- The Mavic Mini 3 Pro might be known as THE DRONE FOR VERTICAL FOOTAGE, but did you know the Mavic 1 Pro did this as well?
- Sometimes a larger drone is IMPORTANT for being able to fly further or in wind. The DJI Mini series doesn’t perform nearly as well as the Mavic Air or Mavic Pro drones
- Consider WHO is around you when you are flying – they can either disturb you or NOT help with your confidence while flying. Especially if you’re new to flying, consider trying to find places where you are ALONE to fly your drone
