We’ve all heard about pickleball taking over old mall spaces, but what about pickleball taking over the National Mall in Washington DC?
This event was so popular over 800 people came out and all spots filled within minutes of reservations opening on the website.
With the Washington Monument and the Lincoln memorial as a backdrop, read on to learn more about what this 3-day National Mall Pickleball event was like.
Why Pickleball on the National Mall
Is this an ongoing thing? Sadly, no.
This was a one time event that happened over 3 days sponsored by Humana, The Trust for the National Mall and Joola (which btw, the Hyperion series is my favorite paddle).
The goal was to celebrate seniors – who have helped to make pickleball the fastest-growing multi-generational sport in the U.S.
The event was completely free and participants had an opportunity to be introduced to the sport (all the equipment use and courts were free), improve their game (free clinics with the pros), or spectate (and watch anyone from professionals to the actual rangers of the National Park Service) play in competitive or friendly play.
There was also open play – which meant ANYONE could sign up and play together with friends or strangers. See more pictures from the event!
