A badass because he marches to his own beat, meet Mike Schibel behind Travel With Meaning Podcast. I was curious about his podcast and in episode 35 of Everyday Badassery we chat about where traveling with meaning started for him.
Spoiler: A one way ticket to Australia with an intention of capturing stories about gratitude with the people he met.
We keep it VERY real in this podcast episode (yes it’s marked explicit) because instead of just exploring the “what happens when you DO live and travel with meaning” I wanted to chat about times in our lives (NOT so happy times in our lives) in which we DID not have meaning and intention and the result of that.
Spoiler: It’s how I started traveling to NYC alone under the alias of “Violet” and had some of the most wild times of my entire life.
Creating intention and meaning when I traveled turned into listening to what I truly needed in my day to day life and that ended up being a move to New York City. Here’s a throwback from that time:
Bringing a travel mindset into our everyday lives
Have you heard someone say this before? Have you said it yourself?
“I’m such a different person when I travel”
I’m guilty of having said this.
But what does it really mean and why are we different people when we travel? Is it because we’re in a new environment and open to trying different things?
The question then becomes: How do we take the open mindedness we have when we travel into our everyday lives?
Below is an example of how I’ve taken 1 minute at the start of my morning to do this…
A one minute morning routine that will bring intention into your day with just 3-2-1
Imagine investing just 1 minute of the 960 minutes you have in your day to make ALL of those minutes worth so much more.
Before you get out of bed in the morning think of three quick things:
- 3 things you are thankful for
- 2 things you MUST do that day
- 1 word or phrase for your day
Why?
When we are feeling grateful, it’s VERY difficult to simultaneously feel anything bad. When you’re feeling really thankful for something, it’s hard to feel mad, upset, angry, frustrated, etc. Focus on 3 things you’re thankful for and as you recall these 3, REALLY let that gratitude fill you up.
Then I like to get literal. I often get carried away with all the things I “later remembered should be on my to do list” and it gets really long. But when you focus in on making sure those TWO definitely get done, they tend to get done.
For the word of the day, consider a word you might use on a day you are traveling.
In the full podcast I share the story of how I used the word “wonder” on a day in which I was going into meetings (and felt over my head about them). Instead of walking into them with an agenda (my original intention), I went into each meeting full of excitement at what could be the relationship I’m creating and how we could work together. The tone and the conversation was totally different and in hindsight, I’m happy about this different approach I took.
Now ask yourself: what words or phrases can you use to inspire a day that gets you into that travel mindset?
