Best Time to Visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields

To witness the most vibrant and captivating flower displays, plan your visit to the Carlsbad Flower Fields between mid-March and mid-April.

During this time, you’ll find up to 200,000 ranunculus flowers per acre, with a staggering total of up to 80 million flowers at the peak of their bloom.

If you’re uncertain about the best time within this range, keep an eye on Instagram stories from the area or visit the free viewing area behind the fields to get a real-time glimpse of the flower fields’ progress.

How to Avoid Crowds at the Flower Fields

For a more serene and enjoyable visit, consider exploring the flower fields on a weekday and in the middle of the day. Unfortunately you cannot see the flower fields at sunrise and sunset (the opening and closing hours are such that it’s not open during these times of the day).

Mondays, in particular, offer a calm and peaceful atmosphere compared to weekends, allowing you to take your time and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the fields.

Don’t Miss Other Hidden Photo Opportunities

While the ranunculus fields are undoubtedly the star attraction, there’s so much more to discover within the Carlsbad Flower Fields. The enchanting butterfly garden offers a whimsical setting for photos, and the charming tractor prop near row three provides a rustic touch to your images.

Be sure to explore the various areas and select the flower colors that best complement your desired visual theme and use the “cut outs” to help make it look like you’re IN the flowers.

Embracing Cloudy Days with Creative Photography Techniques

If the weather is a little overcast during your visit, fear not! You can still capture stunning images by taking close-up shots of the flowers, without touching or disturbing them. A 360 camera can help you achieve unique perspectives and make the most of the moody atmosphere, creating unforgettable photos.

How to Get Drone Photography at the Flower Fields

Although drone photography is prohibited within the flower fields, you can still capture awe-inspiring aerial shots by obtaining the necessary permissions (i.e. getting LAANC from the FAA) and not launching your drone from within the flower fields.

This approach ensures you can enjoy the thrill of drone photography without disrupting other visitors’ experiences and one thing to consider: take flight when the flower fields are closed. This ensures no one is bothered and allows you to get an empty field.
