Drones aren’t really meant to be flown indoors (unless you have a cheap toy drone, which is ONLY meant to be flown indoors), but if you WANT TO, here’s how to do it.
How to fly a drone inside
Option 1: MANUAL launch and fly your drone (without hooking up your phone)
If you don’t know how to do this, you simply turn on your drone and controller, then manually start the propellors by bringing the sticks down and toward each other (left stick at 5 o’clock, right stick at 7 o’clock), then slowly bring the left stick up to launch the drone.
Option 2: WAIT to make sure full GPS is found.
After hooking everything up, let it sit for a LONNNG time until your hear your drone say “the home point has been updated” then keep letting it sit another minute or two (so you KNOW gps is located). Then fly. And when you do, keep it low, keep it close and be ready to land JUST in case at any moment.

Why you should NOT fly a drone inside
When you hook your drone up to your phone and open the DJI app, it’s looking for GPS
Just like making a phone call in an elevator, you’ll likely DROP the call because there’s a lot of stuff (concrete, steel, etc) all around you interfering with the GPS.
Your drone will therefore DRIFT (i.e. move left and right) on it’s own
It’s one of the TOP WAYS new pilots get discouraged because they
- Open their brand new drone
- Take their first flight inside because they think it’s “safer”
- The drone can’t find GPS and drifts then crashes into a wall
- Then they don’t want fly again
Honest story about flying a drone inside
Before I gave my drone presentation, inside the ballroom at the Women in Travel Summit, I practiced flying inside IN the ballroom 11 times.
No not once, not twice.. eleven. This doesn’t mean YOU have to do it this many times, but it’s worth TRYING it (even for 3-5 minutes) before you are in front of an audience and being live-streamed during a conference… lol (no pressure!)
DJI Drones CAN fly inside, but they aren’t really meant to.
Have you flown indoors?? I’d love to know!
