If you’re looking to play pickleball in San Diego, consider coming to the Coronado Island Marriott Tennis Center to play pickleball!
In this post you’ll find what to know about the pickleball courts, the open play schedule and more helpful information.
Coronado Island Marriott Pickleball Facilities
The Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa has a tennis center with pickleball courts on-site that offers guests access to four championship hard courts.
The tennis center and pickleball courts are open to both resort guests and the general public, and offers a variety of programs and services, including private lessons, clinics, and tournaments. More info about how to access the courts can be found later in this post.
Helpful things to know
- You’ll find 8 pickleball courts at the Coronado Island Marriott within their large tennis facility
- Even if you are NOT staying on the property, you can still come to play (helpful tip on parking can be found later in this post). It costs just $6 per person for pickleball open play
- You can expect clean lines on the courts that are dedicated to pickleball with well kept nets
- There are VERY good windscreens around the perimeter of the court, however, given the layout of the pickleball area, there is a “middle area” that separates 4 courts from the other 4 courts. This creates a HUGE wind tunnel and is a problem if it is at all windy
- There are a few seating areas while you are waiting for you game with overhangs for shade
- The windscreens are also very “solid” which means if you are used to hanging a bag on the fence, you can’t. Given the limited seating, you need to put your bag on the floor
- There are no fences between the courts, but there is a “hanging see through net” that divides 4 courts from the other 4 courts
- Bring all your own pickleball gear to play at this facility (no equipment is provided)
- Coaching and lessons are available, I saw a couple getting first time private lessons while I was playing at open play
Overall, I really enjoyed coming for open play pickleball at the Coronado Island Marriott and if I was traveling in the area again (or staying at the resort!) I’d 100% do it again.
When is Pickleball Open Play at Coronado Island Marriott
Anyone (resort guests and non resort guests) can drop in for pickleball open play at Coronado Island Marriott Tennis Center at just $6 per open play.
The current open play times are:
- Mondays from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m
- Thursdays 8 a.m. – 12 p.m
I came on a Monday at 8:30am and it seemed “normal” that there were about 9 people there with more people showing up later.
Everyone there knew each other with seemingly a lot of regular seasoned players that were on the intermediate to intermediate/advanced side of competition.
Each time I played with a new partner they gave me a tip on how to best win against the team we were playing against given everyone knew each other’s strategies so well.
The only beginners there were taking a private lesson with a coach and given how many open courts there were, this wasn’t a problem with balls rolling around
The interesting thing?
They have a unique way of determining who serves first. It’s based on the sun. In other words, the sun hits the court a different way morning vs. evening and depending on which it is, that’s how they determine who serves.
One more interesting thing?
Most people only stay 2 hours and that’s because of free validated parking (it’s actually good news!) more info on that below…

The parking area is easy to find – it’s on the right as you are looking at the front of the Marriott.
When I came to pickleball open play, I didn’t realize I could validate parking and simply parked on the street. Street parking is free and if you don’t mind walking (and you’re able to find a spot!), consider parking on the street so you can play longer than 2 hours.
Below is an example of where you can find street parking right outside the resort.
One of the great things about this location is you have access to the amenities of the Wellness Center. While I don’t think you can use the gym, I certainly used the water fountain and restroom.
Also available are day use lockers (bring your own lock) and showers.
