Carlsbad, California may be known for Legoland and the Flower Fields, but there’s so much more to explore in this beautiful coastal city. Carlsbad is perfect for both long weekend getaways and extended stays.
This guide will help you plan your stay with ideas for things to do, places to eat, and helpful tips for making the most of your time traveling in Carlsbad, California!
Discover and Dine in Carlsbad Village
Carlsbad Village is the heart and soul of Carlsbad, California. A lively and charming area filled with a mix of local boutiques, artisan eateries, and unique galleries, it’s where the city’s seaside personality and small-town charm come together.
It’s place that isn’t just restaurants and bars. Here you can live entertainment, breweries and urban wineries, shopping, events (such as a weekly farmers market and music performances) and so much more.
Carlsbad Village is walkable and full of history. One of my favorite ways to discover new restaurants and learn more about Carlsbad is on the Carlsbad Food Tour! Read on for more information.
Carlsbad History
Carlsbad, California, and Karlovy Vary (also known as Karlsbad) in the Czech Republic share a common heritage anchored in their mineral springs. When the founders of Carlsbad, California, discovered a mineral water source that was chemically akin to the famed water in Karlovy Vary, they named their growing settlement after the European spa town, known for its health and wellness culture.
You can learn not only about the top places to eat in Carlsbad Village, but also about the history of Carlsbad in a tour with Carlsbad Food Tours.
I went on this tour with my mother (she’s been living in Carlsbad for over 30 years) and she learned more in a few hours about the place she lived than she did in those 30 years.
Our tour guide, David (request him!), was incredibly knowledgeable and also was an amazing host as we visited half a dozen restaurants all within easy walking distance around the Village.
One of my favorites were the El Pastor tacos from Senor Grubby’s. Authentically made and served in a casual environment with indoor and outdoor seating, you’re guaranteed some excellent Mexican food when visiting.
What’s cool is The Carlsbad Food Tour has a rotation of restaurants, so depending on which day of the week you go, it might not be the same as a different day. In other words, I’ll definitely be back to try a different set of restaurants!

It’s widely recognized for its reliable weather and excellent surfing conditions. It’s a favored location for surfers of all skill levels due to its consistent waves and accessible beaches.
In Carlsbad, surfers can enjoy a variety of breaks suitable for both beginners learning the ropes and experienced riders seeking more challenging waves. The region is also known for its range of surfing amenities, including schools for beginners and rental shops with an array of boards.
Whether you take a surf lesson or rent a board, three standout beaches in this region are Carlsbad State Beach, South Carlsbad State Beach, and Tamarack Surf Beach.
Carlsbad State Beach
Also known as Carlsbad City Beach, is located near the city center and is popular among locals and tourists alike.
This beach is perfect for families with its picnic areas, restrooms, lifeguard stations, and easy access to local shops and restaurants. Beachgoers can enjoy a variety of water activities, including surfing, swimming, and paddleboarding.
To visit, you can park along Carlsbad Boulevard or in nearby residential areas. However, keep in mind that it can get crowded, especially during weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended.

A 3-mile long beautiful sandy beach located south of Carlsbad City Beach.
This beach is known for its great camping spots and is an excellent choice for those wanting to spend a night under the stars, listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean waves.
The campground is located on the bluff and provides a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. Reservations for camping spots can be made online and are recommended, especially during the peak summer months. The beach also has lifeguard stations and restrooms for public use.
Tamarack Surf Beach
This is a local hotspot for surfers, as the name suggests.
The strong waves make it a fantastic destination for experienced surfers, while the long stretch of beach also makes it a great spot for sunbathing and picnics.

Try a Surf Lesson in Carlsbad California
Carlsbad, California, is a haven for surfers, with its consistent waves and diverse array of surf spots.

Explore Beyond the Beaches with Kayaking and Hiking
Carlsbad is known for its picturesque lagoon, which offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors and many people miss the opportunity to visit the lagoons!
Kayaking is a popular choice, with California Water Sports offering rentals for stand-up paddles, kayaks, and even pontoons.
If you’re interested in understanding the history of the lagoons and the current work being done to protect them, consider visiting Agua Hedionda.
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF) is a non-profit organization in Carlsbad, California, dedicated to the conservation of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, its watershed, and the surrounding area.
The foundation focuses on environmental education, advocacy, research, and community engagement to protect and enhance the ecological health of this critical coastal wetland.
They run the Discovery Center, an ecological, interactive, and educational nature center that provides hands-on exhibits and educational programs about the local flora, fauna, and cultural history.
Open to the public, the Discovery Center is a great place to learn about the local ecosystem. You can plan a visit by checking their operating hours on the official website.
The AHLF also organizes volunteer events and community clean-ups, providing an excellent opportunity for individuals to actively participate in conservation efforts. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a student, or someone who simply wants to give back to the community, visiting the Agua Hedionda Lagoon and supporting the foundation can be a rewarding experience.
A hidden gem in Carlsbad, many people don’t know you can head into their visitor center to learn more and book a tour.
If you’re looking for a scenic walk, Batiquitos Lagoon offers a beautiful 45-minute path filled with wildlife sightings. There are several places to start the out and back 1 hour (relatively flat) trail, but my favorite is this easy parking lot then hiking to the visitor center and back.
