Bonaire Scuba Diving INSIDER TIPS

Many people know that Bonaire is famous for its incredible shore diving, but few realize some key insider tips that can turn these dives into the best ones you’ll log.

From hidden dive spots not found on the map to tips on capturing the perfect underwater photo, here’s everything you need to know to elevate your diving experience on Bonaire Island. Learn from my four years of diving here and don’t miss out on these insider secrets!

Some Dives Are Marked but Not on the Map

Sure, Bonaire’s dive map is great, and the sites marked with yellow rocks are awesome. But did you know there are dive sites that aren’t even on the map? One of my favorite dives is The Rock, which isn’t on the dive map but has an unmarked entry point and an unforgettable experience.

You’ll need good navigation skills and an adventurous spirit to find and enjoy these lesser-known spots.

Tip: Don’t just stick to the dive map—explore other marked but unmapped sites for a unique experience.

Spend Time in the Sand

This tip is huge: spend time in the sand! While many divers head straight for the reef, the sandy areas are often overlooked. That’s where you’ll find some of Bonaire’s coolest marine life like octopus, jawfish, seahorses, and more.

One of my favorite dive sites for this is Something Special. On a dive where others missed the magic, I saw three eagle rays, ten turtles, and four seahorses—all in the sandy areas.

Tip: Don’t rush to the reef. Spend time in the sand and explore the small treasures hiding there.

When to Go for the Best Lighting for Photos and Videos

If you love capturing your dives on camera, timing is everything. The best lighting for underwater photos and videos is during your safety stop. At around 4-5 PM, what we call the “golden hour,” the light comes in at a perfect angle, creating gorgeous, vibrant shots without needing much editing.

Tip: Plan your dives so your safety stop happens during golden hour for the best lighting and effortless photos.

Don’t forget to pack THIS!

There’s nothing worse than forgetting something important on your vacation! Year after year I travel to Bonaire and THIS is the specific pack list I use for this island.

Dive Shallow in General

One of the biggest mistakes divers make in Bonaire is diving too deep. Just because you’re certified to 60 feet doesn’t mean you need to go that deep. Most of the best marine life is in the shallows, and if you stay around 30 feet, you’ll extend your dive time and see way more. Sij regularly does70-90 minute dives in these shallow areas because the life there is simply unbeatable.

Tip: Stay shallow, around 30 feet, to maximize your dive time and spot the most marine life.

Curated Dives with Sij and Jo

Looking for a dive experience tailored just for you? Meet Sij and Jo—two of the best dive guides on the island.

They know Bonaire’s dive sites like the back of their hands and dive on their days off just for the love of it. They’ve shown me some of the most amazing underwater life I’ve ever seen, and their curated dives are second to none.

Tip: Book a private dive with Sij and Jo for an unforgettable, customized dive experience. These two always find the hidden gems!

Even though it’s a ONE way road all the way around, you may consider being CONNECTED while you’re out there. I always use eSIM cards like Sim Local to help me stay connected when I travel!

Stay CONNECTED while traveling!

Helpful travel tip when you’re in a foreign place? Have the ability to avoid roaming charges from your cell phone plan and be connected the moment you touch down on your flight by using an eSIM card!

While traveling in Bonaire I personally used Sim Local and for a fraction of the price I would have paid with my cell phone carrier or even for a local SIM card, it was not only easier, but kept me connected from touch down to take off.

How to Show Your STINAPA Proof

If you’re diving on Bonaire, you know you need to pay the STINAPA nature fee. But you don’t have to worry about carrying your QR code or paper proof with you on dives (please don’t bring your phone!). If you’re stopped by an official and don’t have proof with you, you can always visit their office later to show it. No need to panic mid-dive!

Tip: You don’t need to bring your STINAPA proof with you on dives. You can show it later if necessary.

Don’t Shore Dive, Boat Dive Instead

Shore diving is fantastic in Bonaire, but sometimes it’s just better to boat dive, especially if you’re new to shore diving or find entries difficult.

If you’re diving with non-divers or just want to make things easier, boat diving allows you to access some amazing dive sites like Klein Bonaire without the hassle of shore entry. I also recommend Aquafun for private boat charters to explore sites and relax on the water.

Tip: Don’t struggle with tricky shore entries—opt for a boat dive to make your experience more enjoyable, especially if you’re diving with non-divers.
