2. Can You Walk Around from the Cruise Port?
Yes! One of the best things about Bonaire Cruise Port is that you can literally step off the ship and be in the heart of downtown.
Unlike other ports where you have to walk a long way to reach town, Bonaire makes it super easy. You can be exploring the local shops and restaurants within minutes of disembarking.
As soon as you step off the ship, one of the first things you’ll find is the cruise market. A plaza of local shops selling their goods.
3. How Far is the Beach from the Cruise Port?
There are several beautiful beaches near the cruise port, and they’re easy to reach by taxi. If you’re looking for a beach to relax at, here are a couple of great options:
- Bachelor Beach: Near the airport, it’s a local favorite with a popular food truck (Kite City). About 5 minutes from the cruise port.
- Sorobon Beach: Located at Lac Bay, about 10-15 minutes from the port by car, it offers shallow, calm waters and soft sand, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.
An even better idea? Consider a beach club experience, you can check out Ocean Oasis or Grand Windsock Beach Club, both of which offer beach beds, drinks, food and easy access to getting into the ocean.
4. How Do You Get Around Bonaire from the Cruise Port?
If you want to venture beyond walking distance, there are several transportation options:
Buggies or golf carts: While fun, keep in mind that they don’t go as fast as cars and aren’t air-conditioned, which can be a drawback on hot days.
Taxis: Readily available and an easy way to explore further.
Single-day car rentals: Perfect if you want the freedom to explore the island on your own. This is I would suggest so you have the option to move around quicker AND have air conditioning.
Alternatively consider doing a private tour in which they can create the experience you’re looking for while driving you around.

Klein Bonaire: Take a short boat ride to this uninhabited island for pristine beaches and snorkeling. Just remember, there’s nothing on the island—no restaurants or facilities—so pack everything you need. I suggest instead of taking the water taxi over, take a boat tour. While no place is completely free of crime, Bonaire feels much safer compared to other cruise stops.
7. What Language is Spoken in Bonaire?
English is widely spoken in Bonaire, making it super easy for American tourists to get around.
The island is home to a mix of Dutch and American residents, so you’ll hear both Dutch and English, but you can expect most people to speak fluent English.

8. What Currency is Used in Bonaire?
Bonaire uses the U.S. Dollar (USD), which makes transactions convenient for American visitors. You can use your Visa or MasterCard at most places, and while American Express is accepted, it’s not as common.
You’ll also receive change in USD when you make cash payments.
