If you’re setting sail out of San Juan, Puerto Rico on a Virgin Voyages cruise, read on for the essential tips so you know what to expect and can make your embarkation experience easy.
These tips cover everything from getting to the port, checking in, and what to expect once you’re there.
1. Confirm Your Cruise Port Location
Virgin Voyages uses multiple piers in San Juan, such as Pier 4 in Old San Juan and the Pan American Pier. The location might change, so double-check the Virgin Voyages app for the latest information.
The app typically updates on the day of sailing, but also cross-reference with the website or your cruise documents to avoid confusion.
While these two ports are NEAR each other, they are NOT walking distance from one another.
2. Getting to the Port from the Airport
The San Juan Airport is just 10–20 minutes from the cruise port. A taxi or Uber ride usually costs around $20, but surge pricing during busy times (like Friday afternoons) can increase this cost.
Taxis at the airport have set rates, which can be a more reliable option if rideshare prices spike.

3. Luggage Tips
You can drop off your luggage early—potentially between 9:30 a.m. and noon—before exploring Old San Juan. Verify this timing for your specific sailing.
When checking your luggage, ensure the tags are legible and match your room number to avoid mix-ups. Alternatively, you can carry your luggage on board if you prefer.
4. Check-In Essentials
When it’s time to check in:
- Have your boarding pass (screenshot or app) ready.
- Know your room number (required for tagging bags).
- Bring your passport, even if not strictly required—it’s always better to have one for emergencies.
Note: Virgin Voyages enforces assigned boarding times, so don’t arrive early expecting to board.
Curious about whether or not you need a passport? You can read more about it in this blog post.
Don’t forget to pack THIS!
Virgin Voyages has reimagined sailing and what you need to pack on for this trip is DIFFERENT than a normal cruise line. There are many items I wish I knew to bring (that I didn’t have with me on my first sailing).

5. What to Expect During Check-In
Check-in is similar to airport security:
- Show your boarding pass and passport.
- Pass through a security checkpoint with a metal detector and baggage screening.
Once cleared, you’ll be directed to the boarding area.
6. Disembarkation Details
Virgin Voyages MIGHT disembark at a different pier than embarkation. For instance, you might return to the Pan American Pier instead of Pier 4.
Upon disembarking have your passport ready to exit.

7. Flying In on Embarkation Day
Flying in on embarkation day is risky. To minimize issues:
- Book the first flight out in the morning.
- Check the weather forecast for both your departure and arrival airports.
- Review the on-time performance of your flight online.
Arriving the day before is always the safest option (but I didn’t do that. lol)! You can see it in the video below…

8. Duty-Free Wine Rules
Virgin Voyages allows you to bring two 750ml bottles of wine per stateroom on board.
You can purchase wine at the duty-free shops at the San Juan Airport or at the cruise terminal. Champagne is included in this allowance. Other alcohol (like vodka or rum) is not permitted.
Bottom Line
Embarking on Virgin Voyages from San Juan can be easy if you:
- Verify your pier location in the app before heading to the port.
- Account for potential Uber/taxi surges from the airport.
- Arrive at your assigned boarding time with all required documents ready.
- Take advantage of early luggage drop-off to explore Old San Juan.
- Bring two bottles of wine if you’d like, but stick to the guidelines.
With these tips, you’re set for a smooth start to your cruise adventure. Enjoy your time aboard Virgin Voyages!
