Planning a trip to Tulum? Packing right can make all the difference in how smoothly your vacation goes.
Whether you’re hitting the beach, exploring cenotes, or checking out the local vibe, here’s a breakdown of the key items you’ll need to make your Tulum adventure as enjoyable as possible.
1. Cash vs. Credit Card
One of the top questions travelers ask when visiting Tulum is whether to bring cash, credit cards, or pesos. It really depends on your plans.
If you’re staying primarily in the touristy Tulum Beach area, most places will accept credit cards without a problem.
However, if you plan on venturing out for local experiences—like eating at local spots or booking tours with local guides—you’ll want to have pesos on hand.
Bring more than one credit card in case one gets compromised, and make sure to exchange your money at reputable places (not the airport) for the best rates. Carry crisp bills if you plan to exchange cash, as damaged bills might not be accepted.
What’s the best card to have while traveling abroad?
I use the Charles Schwab card. Why? It’s a debit card with NO annual fees and specifically – there are NO fees at ATMs and there are no foreign transaction fees. This is my go-to card when I travel.

2. Water Shoes & Waterproof Phone Case
Tulum is famous for its stunning cenotes, but exploring these natural wonders can be slippery. Bring water shoes (like these top selling ones) with good grip to prevent falls and enjoy your cenote experience.
Protecting your phone is also important, especially around water, so consider bringing a waterproof phone (like these top selling phone cases) case to keep your device safe while you snap photos of your adventures.
3. Safety Gear
Safety is important in Tulum, especially if you plan on being out and about, whether it’s walking around town or biking.
A crossbody bag (like these top selling ones) are a great way to keep your belongings secure, particularly at restaurants or busy spots where petty theft can happen.
If you’re planning to bike around, consider bringing a clip-on light (like these ones) for better visibility, especially at night, since not all roads have bike lanes.
A birdie alarm (like this one) can also provide peace of mind if you’re traveling solo—it emits a loud noise if you’re in an uncomfortable situation.
Don’t forget to pack THIS!
Tulum is not just a “beach vacay” it’s also a JUNGLE vacation. There are many items I WISH I packed on my first trip.

4. Tulum Vibes
Let’s face it, part of the fun of going to Tulum is looking the part. If you want that boho-chic vibe without breaking the bank, shop for crochet clothing and other Tulum-style outfits before you arrive. It’s much cheaper to bring your own than to buy expensive items once you’re there. Most beach clubs also have dress codes, so it’s good to be prepared.

5. Bug Spray & Rain Gear
Tulum’s jungle setting means you’ll encounter bugs—lots of them, depending on the time of year.
Pack heavy-duty bug spray (100% DEET works best) to keep the mosquitoes at bay, especially during the summer months or when you’re near seaweed on the beach.
The weather can also change quickly, so a compact rain jacket is a smart addition to your packing list. It can easily roll up and fit into your bag, just in case you get caught in a sudden downpour.
Bottom Line
For a great trip to Tulum, pack pesos for local spots, water shoes for cenotes, a crossbody bag for safety, and bug spray for the jungle. Don’t forget to bring Tulum-style outfits and a rain jacket for those sudden downpours!
