Most people have the misperception that a drone pilot’s license is required when you buy a drone. It’s not!
If you just got a drone and you’re wondering if you need a drone pilot’s license the KEY question to ask yourself is: “Am I trying to make money with my drone”?
This could mean:
- Selling your drone photos and videos
- Using your drone footage on a monetized youtube channel
- Helping your neighbor out by seeing if there is something on their roof (yes, this counts)
These are just a FEW examples, but if there is some kind of ‘exchange of value’ for your drone footage, then you are required to get a pilot’s license with the FAA.
What is the Part 107 Drone License?
Key things to know:
- 60 questions
- $175 ish
- Take it at a testing facility
- 70% to pass
Firstly, do you need to register your drone?
The answer depends on whether you’re flying for fun or to make money, and the size of your drone. If you have a mini drone and you’re flying for fun, you don’t need to register it. However, if you have a larger drone, such as a Mavic Air or Mavic Pro, you do need to register it on the FAA website for a fee of $5 for three years. It’s also important to note that you’ll need to put your registration number on your drone.
The TRUST test is something EVERYONE needs to take
Secondly, as of 2021, everyone needs to take the Recreational UAS Safety Test, also known as the TRUST exam.
This test covers basic drone rules and laws, and it’s free to take online. You won’t be able to move on until you answer the questions correctly, but don’t worry, it’s not difficult to pass.
So do you need a pilot’s license to fly a drone?
If you’re flying for fun, you don’t need a license. However, if you’re making money from your drone, such as selling photos or videos, or monetizing your YouTube channel, you’ll need to obtain a Remote Pilot Small Unmanned Aircraft System License.
This requires passing a 60-question exam that costs around $175 and is administered at a local testing facility. The exam covers pilot knowledge rather than just drone knowledge, so you’ll need to study up.
In conclusion, as a new drone owner, it’s important to know the rules and regulations surrounding drone use. You’ll need to register your drone if it’s larger than a mini and take the trust exam, but you only need a pilot’s license if you’re making money from your drone. Remember to always fly safely and within the guidelines set forth by the FAA.

How to Study for the Part 107
I studied with The Pilot Institute. It made it VERY easy.
I sat on a beach watching videos and gave myself less than 2 weeks to study. This enabled me to take the exam in less than 30 minutes and pass at 95%. Why? They break it down.
